Day of the Dead Food Demonstration with Estefannia Arevalo of the Guatelinda Bakery & Coffee

Learn about New Orleans history and culture, especially the Latin American tradition of the Day of the Dead, while observing a cooking demonstration by Estefannia Arevalo of the Guatelinda Bakery & Coffee. Taste a sample of the food at the end of the demonstration.

Two dishes will be prepared: Guatemalan Tamales (chicken & pork) and Fiambre.

The Guatemalan Tamales are made with corn masa and vegetable oil and filled with either chicken or pork. The traditional recado is prepared with tomatoes, ancho chile, guajillo chile, pepitoria (pumpkin seeds), sesame seeds, spices, and salt. Bell pepper and loroco are added, and the tamales are wrapped in banana leaves.

Fiambre is a traditional Guatemalan dish especially associated with the Day of the Dead season. Fiambre is prepared with a variety of vegetables, meats, cheeses, and a seasoned vinegar dressing.
